leva cafe bar - edmonton, ab

A busy day of errands had me all over the city and created a mid afternoon coffee craving. Coming back to the south side wasn't going to cause much of a direction change, so I decided to hit up Leva.

They have been proudly serving the University area since 2001. They promote themselves as offering an Italian style coffee experience with a holistic approach. Besides supplying your caffeine fix they offer quite a few daily food items, think - soups, salads, pizzas, sandwiches, gelato, and sweets, all of which utilize local and/or organic ingredients.

Being mid afternoon I had no real desire to test out the heavier food options, so instead it was an americano and a pumpkin tart. The coffee was good. I don't really know how else to review it, as bad coffee is just so obvious. The pumpkin tart was a solid choice, although not the most adventurous. I thought it might curb the the sweet tooth but I found this version wasn't sweet at all. The crust was light and flaky and the whip cream topping added some much needed sweetness.

With Leva out of the way from my regular stops, I don't get down there often. I'll be sure next time I am in the area to stop in and try a more indulgent piece of chocolatey goodness.

Thanks for sparing me on the espresso bar front! I <3 manuals. I miss my old machine. I feel like robo-barista at times with the Mastrena. We should venture to Transcend one of these days...maybe afternoon this week? Lemme know.

Wow, how nostalgic! I used to live very close to hear a decade ago, and recall this place setting up shop. I think it might have been as early as the year 2000. And that location used to be a public laundry mat if my memory serves correct. The distinct exterior in your lead image caused me to have this major flashback! I do recall seeing people through the windows on most days, so think of this place as being popular back in the day, nice to see it still is.

I too remember it as a laundromat. We lived for a few years in a blue house exactly two blocks away. We moved just before it became Leva, but I've been there since. I never really paid attention to what the place was called, so I didn't put two and two together until I saw your photo. I've heard so much about the place on all these blogs, but I had no idea what anyone was talking about since I no longer live in Edmonton.

Sarah - manual or not, you still make a mean coffee!

shokutsu/Cheryl A - it's such a great building for memories. I did not know it was a laundry mat, but I also remember the exterior from days gone by.

I love Leva. I recently enjoyed a chocolate orange scone and a pumpkin bran muffin from there ... yum.

I have still never been to Leva, although I have been meaning to for ages. I even called over to try and make a reservation during fork fest this year but it was on their early closing night. Still dying to try it!
