the week that was and is - june 3rd, 2009

My first garden is slowly coming along. The weather, which hasn't been that cooperative, has allowed my radishes, carrots and lettuce to start sprouting. I think I even see a few red onions breaking the surface. Too bad the cold weather has played havoc on my basil. To another week, albeit a bit slower, with no work at the moment;

  • I'm sure we all heard about Governor General MichaĆ«lle Jean eating raw seal heart, but it goes to show how far these things travel when the article is published over seas as well.
  • A very cool serving platter made of cork and bamboo. Perfect for keeping your backyard party revelers happy.
  • Cocaine in Red Bull? "And it's not even cocaine itself. According to the tests we carried out, it's a non-active degradation product with no effect on the body. If you start examining lots of other drinks and food so carefully, you'd find a lot of surprising things."
  • Learn about, and eat, sustainable sushi...right at the aquarium!
  • Nothing says lobster roll like 45 pounds of meat and 4 gallons of Miracle Whip!
  • A meal to die for? I've come across pictures and stories about the Heart Attack Grill before, but never a news video. Crazy place - 8000 calories in the Quad! Holy F-Word Batman.
  • A Cheese Treasure Map. What a great way to promote the 116 local cheese makers/shops, all while getting people out on the road. Too bad it's in Wisconsin.
  • My father asked me to make something for The Main Street Cruisers pot-luck, so last Friday I cooked up 10 lbs of pork butt over 9 hours and shredded it for pulled pork sandwiches.

  • Made my way down to the City Market with my friend Jennifer who is in town. She picked up a bad-ass Lego ring. Sometimes jewelry can be so creative and fun...just not very masculine!

  • And finally, it will be nice to see fellow bloggers in person again. Hopefully we can decide on a date and location for our next foodie get-together, as Sharon mentioned she has fielded some inquires. So the wiki is back up and ready for suggestions!

Re: Michaelle Jean. Next, magnifying glasses are banned because children use them to "burn" ants. (sarcasm off). No, I agree with the governor general, it is something the Inuit has been doing for ages; who are we to tell them to stop? I can go on and on but it will be just pure pointless arguments... (sigh)

Re.: Red Bull. Knowing this company since the beginning when I still lived in Austria, my belief is that this was all planned.

The ultimate Guerilla marketing stunt. EVERYBODY talked about it and Red Bull was fully aware that their Cola will never gain traction. However, Red Bull sales are up again.

Hey Maki. Over the years at IKEA, I've sampled some good and some bad. I'm sure I could bring a few goodies to a gathering one day.

H.Peter - I couldn't help but think we hadn't heard anything exciting/controversial from the Red Bull camp for a while. Somehow I wasn't that surprised, as I'm a believer that any publicity is good publicity.
